Best Laptops under 200 Dollars

Chromebooks are basically laptops that only capable of running Chrome . My previous laptop was mainly used to process digital photos using Lightroom or Adobe’s Creative Cloud. Chromebooks are not powerful enough to run real programs like Lightroom, Photoshop, etc. They are not set up to install the software needed and even if they were, they do not meet the minimum specs for resource heavy programs like Photoshop or the latest PC game. If you need a laptop to run Windows or Mac OS programs, a Chromebook is NOT for you.

Lenovo N42 Chromebook

Lenovo N42 is designed and manufactured by keeping needs and budget of everyday users in mind. It is a Chromebook which offers reliable performance and battery life in a good looking chassis. The laptop is finished in a black color which gives this laptop more professional and stylish looks. It is less than an inch thick and also weighs around 3 pounds which makes this chromebook ideal for people who travel more often. It has a keyboard with adequately big keys to type conveniently, and it has a decent touchpad as well. This chromebook is powered by 1.6 GHz Intel Celeron N3060 processor and 4GB of RAM. It offers 16GB of SSD storage which can be further expanded via memory card slot. With more than 7 hours of battery backup.

Chrome OS

Using Linux as a base, Google designed Chrome OS to work exclusively with web applications. The user interface takes a minimalist approach, which greatly resembles the Google Chrome web browser. Chrome OS was built for people who spend a majority, if not all, of their time on the computer connected to the Internet. The only application that comes installed on Chrome OS is a special Google Chrome web browser with an integrated media player and file manager. All other applications are accessed by adding apps from the Google Chrome Web Store. Since Chrome OS relies entirely on Google’s web apps and access to Google’s services, it is highly recommended that you connect to the Internet to optimize your Chrome OS experience.

The 14″ N42 Series 16GB Chromebook from Lenovo is a light and portable notebook packed with helpful features for students. Powered by a 1.6 GHz Intel Celeron N3060 Dual-Core processor and 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM, the N42 Chromebook can multitask and quickly access frequently used files and programs. For pictures, files, and more, it’s equipped with 16GB of eMMC flash storage. Should you need additional room, you can connect external storage solutions using its two USB ports. Its 14″ display, driven by integrated Intel HD graphics, has a 1366 x 768 resolution for viewing HD content. Connect to the Internet via 802.11ac Dual-Band Wi-Fi and pair compatible wireless peripherals with Bluetooth 4.1 technology to free up USB ports for more important devices. Other integrated features include a webcam, SD card reader, and an audio in/out jack. The operating system installed is Chrome OS.

This chromebook is best under $200 for school and college students or businesspeople whose works are mostly internet dependent.

Samsung Chromebook 3 XE500C13-K02US

If you can do your tasks in the Chrome web browser, you should be able to do it on a Chromebook: watch YouTube videos, shop on Amazon, check email, type a document in Word (online version), pay bills online, etc. As a college student, I can use my Chromebook to complete 99% of all assignments required. The one snag that I had was when I needed to install a screen recorder for a Jing presentation in a technology class. Of course, I could not install the software on to yours Chromebook. Outside of that, I have been able to do everything I’ve needed to with my Chromebook.

Since this is a browser-based machine, I should also mention that there is no way to directly install another web browser. I would like to have Firefox installed also since some web sites work better with it than with Chrome…but if you try to install the browser from the web you will get an error message. I have read that there is a way to Frankenstein a copy of Firefox onto the Chromebook but it is not that important to me.
As far as the quality of this Chromebook…it is very lightweight and very flimsy. In it’s defense, all of the Chromebooks that I looked at in this price range are thin, lightweight and a bit flimsy. I really like the look of this Chromebook and the dimpled surface helps to give you grip when you are handling it. I try not to put the full weight of my wrists on this keyboard when I am typing and I surely try to not flex the lid/display as I open and close it (many reviews on the net say that the screen is easily broken and only adhered internally with a bit of tape…don’t know if it is true since opening it up will void my warranty).

The plus side is that this is a speedy little laptop. As soon as you open the lid it is booted up and ready to work within a few seconds. Once booted you must sign in with your Google credentials for full access to your machine and it’s features. I was able to surf without lag with 10-12 tabs open at once. If some of those tabs were streaming video, I could not open up as many before I saw the lag (but who does that…for me it was only for testing purposes). I watch HD video on my Chromebook without any problem (YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, Tablo, etc). I used this Chromebook for the last several months during the summer semester of class. I would definitely buy this again and recommend it to others that need a cheap, efficient work horse. I would just caution others to be careful to treat it with kid gloves as a large fall or hit would probably destroy it on the first occurence. I recommend a padded case and a protective skin.

Cheap price
Nowhere near the risk for viruses/trojans as Windows systems
Can do most common tasks such as paying bills online, shopping, watching online videos, etc.
Quick and easy updates via Chrome OS
You can make any moderately modern printer able to print from the Chromebook using Google Cloud and a little work.
Very nice looking display for the price point.

Cheap, plastic, flimsy feel
Cannot run software that require a true OS
Doesn’t feel durable
Need Google Cloud Print enabled printer to print out of the box.

Samsung Chromebook 3

Best Cheap Laptops (Under $200)

A great value, the 11.6-inch Chromebook 3 offers the brightest screen we’ve seen on any laptop in this price range, hitting a strong 259 nits on our light meter, where other sub-$200 systems struggle to reach 200 nits. That luminosity allows for wider viewing angles and a much better web-surfing and movie-watching experience. Thanks to its 4GB of RAM, the Chromebook 3 is also a multitasking champ, easily handling a huge array of tabs. Best of all, Samsung’s laptop lasted over 9 hours on a charge, which is more than enough of a life span to get through a school day. Since, as its name suggests, this is a Chromebook, it’s great for kids and anyone who lives online.

I bought this as a secondary laptop that was easier to carry and less expensive than my gaming laptop. I use this for documents, spreadsheets, youtube, social media, and occasionally streaming amazon prime. Its the perfect size to put in my backpack before a flight. You get the option to reach documents and other work products without being on the network, and it automatically syncs when you get back online. Because it’s a google device, it works well together in concert with everything else I use google on (android, wear os, etc). I can schedule appointments on this laptop, and I can instantly get reminders on my phone and my watch. For around 150 bones, you can’t beat it. Keyboard types well, mouse track pad is alright too. Remember what this is.  If you’re looking for a productivity booster in a small package, and already use google a lot, this is perfect. I would definitely buy again.

It’s a chromebook, not a windows PC, if you’re looking for a full PC experience…buy something else. However, if you need the flexibility of Windows, you’ll have to look elsewhere. We also listed some best cheap laptops with a price of $400 and $200.

Dell Inspiron Flagship High Performance Laptop

Out of the box, everything is loaded but the upgrade process (windows and system updates) will require an external drive or a micro SD card . Go through the update process, activate your 1 year of Microsoft Office 365 and enjoy. I would recommend going to a technical shop and upgrading the memory to 8 GB especially if you want to watch videos and allow the system to move a little faster. Also be careful of the limited hard drive space because that will slow things down and make use of the SD card when you save or download things. This process can take about 4-6 hours because of the limited hard drive space and depending on your internet connection.

– Make sure you activate your 1 year of Office 365 as mentioned above.
– Go to the Dell support site and enter the service tag to download all the drivers and key Dell software for this device (I placed them on my Micro SD card).

As many of you know the amount of “bloatware” is huge. I did a clean “custom” install of Windows 10 Pro 64-bit completely erasing all the partitions (the system out of the box has Windows Home and a couple of recovery partitions with Dell drivers and utilities). I created a local administrator account (since none of the drivers were installed). I proceeded through the update process to patch and update the OS (I hardwired with a USB ethernet connector to my network connection). After several reboots, the update process completed and the base OS was ready. I then went through and installed the Dell drivers for Audio, Wifi, Graphics, Chipset, Micro SD (the default was loaded with windows install) as well as the Dell Support Assistant and a few others. After several reboots, the system was ready. At this point, I have about 13GB of free space on the hard drive. I then installed Office and several utilities that I use. I made the changes in the Settings to manage storage and save everything to the micro SD card. I still recommend upgrading the memory to 8 GB. By the time I was done, I had about 11 GB free on the hard drive. This process is also about 3-4 hours to get everything ready to go and current.

Please note that the hard drive is 32GB eMMC flash and is not upgradeable to an SSD (The eMMC is soldered onto the Motherboard).

Accessories I bought:

Logitech Wireless Mouse: Works great with this computer. The little wireless fob discreetly stays in the USB port.
Evecase: Works great for taking this computer and accessories on the go.
64GB microSD card: To expand the storage space. I changed the settings so pretty much everything gets saved on there.

Overall: I am really enjoying this little laptop and it’s perfect for on the road. I would have loved the capability of the touch screen but the extra cost for the touch model was not worth it for me. I use an external mouse and can do what I need. I also bought a Chromebook and I sent that back in favor of this system. I hope this was helpful.

Acer Aspire 1

Best Cheap Laptops (Under $200)Acer Aspire 1 is a sleek-slim windows laptop packed with adequate hardware inside to carry out your daily works. From editing documents to heavy multi-tabbed internet surfing, this Acer laptop is capable of handling all basic works pretty smoothly.
This laptop is finished in an obsidian black color which makes this laptop look more stylish while its 3.6 pounds of weight makes it easier to carry and use this laptop from anywhere on the go. It has a 14-inch full HD screen which is bright and sharp enough to view everything in detail while webcam on top will allow you to video call with your friends and family. It has chiclet keyboard with function keys to use Windows 10 with ease on this laptop. Its touchpad is not much responsive, but once you use this laptop for month or two, you will get used to it.

I bought this really to be able to boot fast, shut down fast, hibernate while I am away for a few moments, and just be a go to computer in the living room. It is serving it’s purpose very well. I bought a 32gb USB for it, the tiny Samsung I think that only sticks out a smidge. This way I can leave it on when I put it in the bag for travel where if you had a full USB stick, you would have to disconnect it. That is enough room for me as I mostly use this for travel, the living room surfing the web, and work on my Ancestry links on the web. I use it for quick things instead of going into the bedroom to turn on the desktop I7 that takes a while to boot and load up.

This computer at only 14″ and fast boot up, is really just perfect. This laptop gets power from its Intel Celeron N3450 quad-core processor which handles all regular works pretty smoothly on this laptop. It has 4GB of RAM to give extra smoothness to your multitasking needs, and it comes with 32GB of internal storage which can be further expanded by inserting a memory card.

This laptop can be considered as best cheap laptop under $200 for those who are looking for best windows laptop within their small budget.

Lenovo Ideapad 120s

Best Cheap Laptops (Under $200)For those who are a fan of Lenovo laptops, here is another Windows laptop under 200 dollars from Lenovo. It is beautiful and really well-built laptop as you would expect from Lenovo. It is finished in grey color, and the material used to build this laptop is scratch and smudge proof. It has standard 11 inches of LED display with the resolution of 1366 by 768.This laptop is small so it does not have DVD drive but its small chassis has enough room to fit all the required ports including USB Type-C, USB 3.0, HDMI port and fast 802.11ac WiFi adapter.

The keyboard on this laptop is very good considering the price that it comes for. Keys travel enough distance to give nice tactile feedback while typing and touchpad also provide fluid navigation to use Windows 10 on this laptop. This laptop is powered by Intel Celeron processor which is fast and also battery efficient. It has 4GB of RAM which makes everyday tasks on this Lenovo laptop buttery smooth and it has 64GB of inbuilt flash storage.

It can run up to 8 hours on one full charge of battery and it also weighs just 3 pounds which makes this laptop ideal for writers, frequent travelers and also for school and college students.

Best Cheap Laptops (Under $200)It’s not perfect, but the HP Stream 11 offers the best combination of performance and battery life we’ve seen from a sub-$200 Windows laptop. Because the Stream 11 has 4GB of RAM, it’s able to handle multitasking or productivity better than competitors that come with only 2GB on board. HP’s laptop also lasts a solid 8 hours and 23 minutes on our battery test. At just 2.5 pounds, HP’s laptop is also a great size for kids. Its bright lavender or blue color scheme will appeal to children (or the inner child in all of us). This Stream’s 11.6-inch display is its biggest weakness, as it is both dim (188 nits) and a bit washed out. The laptop’s keyboard is decent, though a little shallow, with 1.2mm of travel. However, a sharp front lip could irritate your wrists if you try touch typing.

I’ve had this computer for about a month. I use this laptop for my online class. I had to uninstall some bloatware and change some settings to get it to work faster, but it is a great little laptop. Don’t expect to play an intensive games or edit movies with this laptop. It’s good for doing work or school related things, browsing the Internet, and watching Netflix.

-Very small and lightweight. I can easily lift it with one hand.
-Aesthetically pleasing design. I love the purple color and the finish.
-Small design makes it very portable. Easy to fit into backpacks or briefcases.
-Relatively fast computer, takes no time to startup/shutdown.
-Good keyboard

-Speakers are pretty quiet and poor quality. Recommend using headphones for watching movies/listening to music.
-Webcam is also subpar and pretty grainy.
-Touchpad can be finicky, using a wireless mouse with it is really easy though.
-32GB hard drive can support the operating system and not much else. That being said, a $20 64GB microSD will resolve this issue.

Overall, this computer is ideal for school and work, emails, and browsing the internet. That being said, it’s great at doing those things. I think it’s an excellent value for the price!
