What are Plasma Cutters?

The basic function of a plasma cutter is to convert a gas such as Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Argon into the fourth state of matter (known as Plasma) for the purpose of metal cutting.Firstly, the gas is blown out through a very small nozzle for increasing its velocity. Then this high-velocity gas is sent through an electric arc which further enhances its temperature to such an extent which changes the gas into a highly efficient form of matter, plasma. As a result of this process, a super-heated torch is formed which cuts right through metals. The plasma also occupies the cutting surface, thus making it easy for the torch to do its work.  Unlike other such processes, this one is a highly efficient procedure leaving very few debris. So when you are looking to save a considerable amount of time cutting materials, the plasma cutters come handy in this regard.

Having read reviews stating that Primeweld provides good service, I decided to spend a little more for some piece of mind, and to support a seller that takes care of customers after sale. Having never run a plasma cutter, I had some questions and sent emails to Primeweld, whcich were answered within an hour. He answered my questions, and sent me tool in the mail (his cost for tool and shipping) that he hoped make my experience better while welding with 110 voltage. It does now run pretty well with 110, but physics is a stubborn thing, and only so much current can go through a 20amp 110-120 circuit. So if you need to cut steel thicker than 1/8” regularly you’ll have better cuts with 220. And that’s with any machine. It just takes a lot of current to blow through thick steel. I got this because I was given a 60” square of 1/8” steel, and it’s reallt nastbto cut with a torch. The Primeweld 50 cut it cleanly, even on 120v, though it was a little slow. Think realistically how often you’ll need to cut steel thicker than that. If you do, plan on wiring in a 220v 30amp outlet. Otherwise, you’ll be ok with 120v. Photo is of 1/2” cold roll it cut through in about 5 seconds. That would have taken a long time with my torch, and burned a lot of acetylen. I suspect that many of these machine have similar guts, and what differentiates them is the quality of the accessories and the support. I was impressed with the accessories. There’s plenty of hose and fasteners, so you don’t need to scrounge around getting it set up. And if you have a question, I’m sure the folks at Primeweld will do whatever they can to get you straight.

Important: do not be alarmed if you power-off the unit and it does not power-off, immediately! Wait 8-10 seconds before you do anything else… continue reading to understand why… The product received had improved features from the models I had researched and seen videos of, such as longer 7′-8′ heavy duty power cord (install your own plug), air pressure gauge externally installed on included pressure regulator (versus panel mounted susceptible to leaks per reviews), full-length heavy but pliable protective vinyl sleeve (versus light-duty denim) for the torch hose/control cable assembly, heavy-enough ground clamp (replaced the 8′ long ground cable with heavier 4 gauge wire) and an 8+ second delay before power-off when you push the rocker switch to the “off” position. I saw a video of someone power-off, -on, -off and -on in quick sequence, then the unit blew up…(understand now?).

I installed a NEMA L6-30P (30A locking) plug for 220VAC use, and made up a foot long NEMA “L6-30R”-to-“5-15P” pigtail for 110VAC use without having to change the plug. The machine works on both! Cuts deeper stock on 220V with higher available amperage settings.

The contact drag tips work great and I do not feel that the pilot arc feature is that necessary for the projects on my list. The smoothness of the surface on which the drag tip is in contact with will help determine the quality of the cuts but use of smooth-edge guides or templates is highly recommended instead of freehand for beginners. I prefer to have the side of the drag tip up against the guide because you can make more accurate cuts versus having the ceramic cup against a taller/thicker guide. For “pocket” cuts, you can “spark” a hole through with the drag tip in contact with the work piece… initially, hold at an angle away from you, then straighten up to vertical as soon as burn-through is achieved, otherwise, “gouging” of work piece will result, and continue with the required cut. If you need accuracy or cleaner start cut, drill a small pilot hole to start the pocket cut.

The 2.5 or 5 second airflow delay works and takes very little to get used to. You do not have to wait for the airflow to stop before continuing with a cut… not like the power switch thing… I have it set to 2.5 secs.

The included miniature  pressure gauge (1/4″ center mount) reads in bars/Pascals. I used a red marker to draw a line on the dial face for the equivalent PSI value. It will be replaced with a 2″ or larger pressure gauge that reads in PSI.The brass hose barb on the back of the unit to which you connect the air supply (post filter/regulator) is not 1/4″, not 3/8″ but something in between… metric 7 or 8. What a PITA! I ended up using two (2) layers of vinyl shrink tubing to make the 3/8″ hose fit over it with just enough fit so that the hose clamp can be tightened sufficiently over it. I used a 90 degree elbow 1/4″ FNPT-to-3/8″ hose barb on the outlet of the filter/regulator to relieve the twisting forces on the outlet side of filter/regulator assembly.

Besides the 110V-220V power pigtail, I also made up a foot-and-a-half long air hose pigtail with an in-line dryer/dessicant filter (filled with blue indicated silica gel beads that turns pink when it needs to be replaced). It isn’t overkill. Very dry air is important for the ionization to occur without “pollutants” to generate clean plasma; besides, moisture laden air will damage the unit and consumables. The added benefit of this pigtail is it also relieves the twisting forces on the inlet side of the filter/regulator… the mounting bracket that bolts onto the back of the plasma cutter is not heavy gauge and bends easily, and the small filter/regulator body material is only die cast.

So far, the unit has performed flawlessly. I gave in and finally bought this plasma cutter when my 14″ metal cutoff saw was just-too-small in capacity to cut 6″ x 6″ x 1/4″ square tubing. The unit weighs less than 15 lbs and is very portable. It sits on the middle shelf of a converted medical equipment cart that holds a 220V MIG welder on top and a 220V arc welder on the bottom (all wired with L6-30P plugs) (Argon tank on the back). The only modification to the unit was installing an O-ring on the inside of the panel mounted control cable coax connector so that it protruded more from the front of the case to make it easier to thread the PITA nut of the torch assembly control cable.
